When people think of MGD, they often think of beautiful kitchen worktops, elegant islands, and utility room surfaces. It’s true—stone is our specialty, and the kitchen is typically the heart of our work. However, our expertise in templating, precise CNC fabrication, and meticulous fitting is not confined to one room.

This project, a custom marble fire hearth for a period property, showcases our multi-disciplined approach and ability to bring bespoke stone solutions to any corner of a home. We believe in total versatility, and this stunning Carrara marble installation is the perfect illustration of MGD’s wider capabilities.

Taking On The Marble Fire Hearth Challenge

The client’s primary goal was to update a traditional fireplace in a key reception room. The existing fireplace, featuring a handsome wooden mantel and exposed red brick in the chimney recess, felt rustic but lacked the finish and luxury expected of a modern, high-end home. The key challenge wasn’t just aesthetic; it was structural.

Period properties are rarely square or level. The original opening was asymmetrical, the wooden floorboards beneath were uneven, and the depth of the fireplace recess had an irregular curved profile that needed to be perfectly incorporated into the new stone design. This was not a standard, off-the-shelf cut.

Our Approach: Precision from Start to Finish

Our process began with templating. This crucial first step, where we use traditional, time-honoured methods to create a precise map of the space, allows us to account for all the quirks of a period building: the subtle dips, the uneven walls, and the specific curve of the chimney opening. Without this precision, the final fit would have unsightly gaps or require excessive filler, which is simply not our standard.

The template was then handed to our expert stone craftsmen for fabrication. We selected a high-quality Carrara marble—renowned for its white field and elegant grey veining—to provide a luxurious, polished contrast to the dark wood and red brick.

We opted for a soft pencil edge (a slim, rounded finish) to give the hearth a gentle, classic profile that wouldn’t look too stark against the traditional features.

Key Features & Craftsmanship

The defining feature of this project is the seamless integration of the hearth with the original structure.

Integrated Curve: The main, rectangular hearth slab was cut to perfectly accommodate a smaller, semi-circular piece of marble that slots into the chimney opening, mirroring the existing brick arch. This bespoke insert required extremely accurate cuts and polishing to ensure the joints were virtually invisible.

Edge Work: The pencil edge finish was applied uniformly around the entire perimeter, providing a professional and safe transition between the 30mm thick stone and the wooden floor.

Material Contrast: The highly polished, cool white marble serves as a beautiful foil to the matte, rustic texture of the exposed red brickwork and the rich, dark tone of the wooden mantelpiece. This juxtaposition of textures and colours creates a focal point that is both classic and contemporary.

Overcoming Obstacles

Working on existing architecture always presents unknowns. In this case, ensuring the final hearth sat perfectly level and stable on the old, slightly warped wooden floor was the main on-site hurdle.

Our installation team is trained to not just place the stone, but to fit it. They meticulously prepared the base, ensuring a perfectly level foundation before the heavy marble was permanently sealed. This dedication to the foundation is what guarantees the longevity and flawless appearance of the final product.

The Transformation

The transformation is dramatic. Where once the fireplace felt unfinished, it now projects an aura of elegance and permanence. The custom-cut Carrara marble hearth instantly elevates the room’s design standard, demonstrating that stone doesn’t just add function; it adds significant value and style.

The client was delighted to see how MGD’s expertise—which they initially planned to use only for their kitchen—could revitalise another crucial space in their home.
